A UA lifeguard’s job is to ensure water safety by supervising swimmers, enforcing rules, preventing accidents, and responding to emergencies with rescues, first aid, and CPR, all while maintaining vigilance and excellent communication skills in aquatic environments such as pools, beaches, and water parks. They must be certified in life-saving techniques, conduct safety checks, and educate patrons on water safety, making the role demanding yet rewarding.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervision & Prevention: Actively scan the water and surrounding areas to prevent incidents and enforce rules (e.g., no running, diving in shallow areas).
- Emergency Response: Perform rescues, administer CPR/AED, and provide first aid for injuries or distress.
- Rule Enforcement: Clearly communicate and enforce facility policies to ensure patron safety.
- Facility Maintenance: Inspect pool equipment, water quality, and the general area for safety hazards.
- Communication: Effectively interact with swimmers, parents, and staff, often requiring strong interpersonal skills.
- Weather Monitoring: Monitor conditions and direct swimmers out of the water if necessary (e.g., thunderstorms).
Essential Qualifications & Skills
- Certifications: Current Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications are typically required.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to perform quick movements, strenuous activity, and rescues.
- Vigilance: Must remain alert for extended periods while sitting, standing, or walking.
- Critical Thinking: Strong decision-making skills for on-the-spot problem-solving.
